The following article takes an in depth analysis into sleep paralysis and tries to provide some solutions and answers. After reading it you should be in a better position to deal with the problem.
REM is the period of sleep that is associated with dreaming. If during the time that you are experiencing a dream and you are suddenly woken up then you will experience REM sleep paralysis. The reason you experience the paralysis is because the change from being totally asleep to being fully awake is meant to be a gradual transition. When it becomes sudden the body and the brain’s reaction times are not the same and this causes the paralysis.
Why does it occur when you are having dreams? This is simply because dreams are not real and you should not be reacting to them. So when sleep is suddenly interrupted during REM sleep and you try and react to things you believe to be real, the paralysis sets in.. I’m sure you can appreciate the harm we do to ourselves and others if we could react to the things that we see in our dreams.
So you can clearly see that anything that will interrupt the normal sleep pattern of an individual will likely cause it. There are some things that the brain reacts to even if you are asleep. Light and sound are two examples I can think of. So making sure no light filters to your face when you sleep and a relatively quite environment are good.
There are also other substances that are known to contribute to this condition. If you take alcohol, caffeine or smoke at night or before you sleep you are increasing the chances of experiencing sleep paralysis. Try and avoid tension and putting yourself under a lot of stress.
REM sleep paralysis is an acknowledged medical condition and you shouldn’t feel ashamed or embarrassed to get help for it. There are many other remedies to this problem; you are welcome to further research as information is freely available on the net.
